“S. Eufemia” (ICAO: LICA)
The design for this new passenger terminal represented a truly interesting challenge in terms of design complexity and site construction planning.
Sant’Eufemia Airport (IATA code: SUF, ICAO code: LICA) is an airport serving the city of Lamezia Terme in the south western part of Italy. In 2014, the airport handled 2.4 million passengers.
The main task involved designing the new passenger terminal envisaging the progressive demolition of the existing terminal which was built in the 70s (and no longer able to cope with the growing air traffic) and the contemporaneous functioning of both, the new and the remaining part of the old one, until completion of the new passenger terminal.
Right from the beginning therefore, it proved to be a challenging design process, which involved the task of progressively accomplishing the layout of every component, such as structure, systems/plant in compliance with the architectural design project developed by Studio Valle Architetti Associati, one of the leading firms in Italian architecture and urban design.
The project foresaw the realization of the Terminal organized in multilevel terraces overlooking a central green space.
Reinforced concrete was used in the main structures, while laminated wood was used to sustain the curved glazing façades.
In the design of plant, our proposal included some bioclimatic criteria such as:
- combination of natural and artificial lighting;
- use of natural ventilation to implement the working of HVAC plant
- geothermal heating and cooling;
- semi-transparent solar photovoltaic glazing;
- cogeneration plant.
It was calculated that the PV power plant (extendend for 3000 m2) could been able to generate 500kW .
The complexity of the architectural issues and the design plant issues, in combination with the need to utilize both the wings of the passenger terminal, resulted in an extremely interesting project that won the tender.
Some problems concerning public funding to SACAL., the Airport’s Managing Company, had stopped the continuation of the design process. Currently the passenger terminal is unvaried and remains in the same condition as before the tender.
